A young child breathes in toxic methane gas as she pokes through the massive garbage dump; younger children risk disease as they play nearby, while their mother desperately searches through the enormous trash heap looking for any items she can turn into cash. Her dreams for her family did not start in this pile of trash, but each day those dreams of a safe and secure life fade slowly into distant memory. Determined that a giant pile of refuse will not kill this mother's dream, Safe Passage is on the scene.

More Information

Safe Passage works with the poorest at-risk children of families living around the Guatemala City garbage dump. Within a safe and caring environment, they provide a comprehensive and integrated program that fosters hope, good health, educational achievement, self-sufficiency, self esteem, and confidence.

Working with poverty-stricken, at-risk children living in and around the Guatemala City garbage dump, Safe Passage offers a caring environment with the goal of creating opportunities and dignity through education. They provide safety, care, comfort, and financial support to these children who are finally able to afford enrollment fees, not to mention the school uniforms, shoes, supplies and books which were previously far from reach.

Volunteers and donations make it possible for every child to attend a local public school for the half-day term followed by educational reinforcement at the Safe Passage center. With volunteer funding, they have provided a comprehensive and integrated program that fosters hope, good health, educational achievement, self-sufficiency, and self confidence, and have so far educated and assisted 500 children.
